Cornish Farmhouse Case Study

Part of a seamless extension to a traditional Cornish farmhouse, this kitchen combines dramatic proportions with period features to create a family room that's enviably spacious.

With a space that demands large furniture, Barnes designer, Patrick Gunning, came up with the idea of an outsized central island unit, around which simple runs of cabinetry are situated to give a freestanding feel. The island also provides an abundance of essential storage as well as a clever pullout tilt bin that enables the chef to slide waste directly into the bin from its surface.

In order to achieve such a spectacular arched roof, several supporting pillars were required to bear its weight but Patrick has worked them into the kitchen design to minimise the obstrusion in the space. For example, a pillar to the left of the Aga was matched on the opposite side with an elegant mantelpiece joining the two to create the impression of a hearth that has been in-situ for decades.

In terms of colour scheme, the painted furniture has been kept deliberately light to help enhance the feeling of space in the room, while the natural wooden hues of the solid oak beams and antique flooring are picked up in the beech bun handles of the cabinetry as well as the oak worktops.
