Elegant Townhouse
This rather grand kitchen is perfectly suited to the style and proportions of the property it sits within. An early 19th century townhouse in Devon, the house retains many original and unique features including the stained glass and sash windows, intricate cornicing and arched doorways. Although the owner wanted the kitchen to work well within its classic environment he also wanted the room to feel fresh with contemporary touches .
A previous client of Barnes of Ashburton the owner was confident enough to simply let Barnes’ designer Debbie Bowden take the lead in the chosen style and layout of the kitchen. A sleek bank of cabinets along one wall keeps the space simple and uncomplicated, whilst the use of a Farrow and Ball’s French Grey makes a bolder more modern statement as does the addition of streamlined bar handles in stainless steel.
One of the most striking features in this kitchen is the Pagoda hood, which had to perfectly match original coving and required some skilled workmanship from the Barnes team of craftsmen.
As with most period properties the cabinets had to be made by hand to fit the uneven walls, in this kitchen the woodwork also had to be shaped around the ornate skirting boards. The considered mix of contemporary stainless Steele appliances work effortlessly alongside more traditional elements such as the ceramic Belfast sink. This kitchen is a perfect example of how different materials can work in harmony. The different tones within the Verde Rose Granite work-surfaces bring together the various elements in the room, the paintwork, stainless steel, plasterwork and the stained glass all to great effect.
One highly practical feature of this large kitchen is the bespoke larder or pantry cupboard, designed to fit an unused space this stylish yet very functional piece of furniture provides storage for everyday foodstuffs and cutlery. Another piece of bespoke cabinetry turns a dark cupboard into an attractive drinks cabinet with etched glass covered shelving for crockery and glassware.
The overall feel of this kitchen is one of understated elegance a successful combination of classic and contemporary styles – a truly trademark Barnes kitchen.
