Every so often we get a call or a visit to the workshop and are asked to make something a little different from our usual remit. As traditional cabinet makers we have the skills and facilities to make virtually anything out of wood and we love a challenge so we generally say yes !

Although bespoke handmade kitchens are our mainstream business, free standing furniture has always been in big demand. Many of the kitchens that we design and install include items of free standing furniture, ranging from kitchen tables large and small, pantry cupboards, Welsh dressers, chests of drawers through to wooden cook’s benches – we make them all.

In addition to free standing furniture for the kitchen we also design and supply wooden bedroom furniture and in fact items for the whole home. However showcases for medals is definitely a first for us here at Barnes of Ashburton !

So along comes Mr Tom Daley and asks if we can make him some display cases for his plethora of valuable medals that he has collected throughout his diving career.

Plymouth born Tom has indeed a fair few medals that he has won over the years since starting competitive diving as a child, culminating in his World Champion 10m dive medals that he started winning as young as 15. Since then he has continued to win so many more Bronze, Silver and Gold medals at European, Commonwealth, World and Olympic level that he needs a number of display cases to house them all.

Back at the workshop we created a solid oak frame design that we produced for Tom in two sizes. With so many medals to display we made a number of these cases which have now been installed. Tom has been good enough to share the photos with us so you can see how they look!

If you have anything in mind that you would like making from wood then please feel free to contact us and we can come up with some ideas for your next piece of handmade wooden furniture or indeed anything else.
